2009 Lexus RX350 Engine Replacment Question.........

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have 100,000 miles on this car.  Over last few months it has been blowing white smoke from tailpipe randomly.  Had local lexus dealership check it out and found black sludge in engine. AND engine was 3-4 quarts low.  No obvious leaks.  Gave me an oil change said keep eye on oil levels and not much can do about the smoke unless you want to spend $$$ to get into engine to repair.  1 week later.  Wife drove car on 6 hour road trip.....lots of smoke randomly.  Got home and checked oil level next day and NO oil on dipstick.  Lexus dealership is now looking at ordering me a used replacement engine with similar miles to buy used engine and install looking at ballpark of 6,000.  I have never replaced an engine.  Car is in great shape and would like to keep it......any thoughts on whether or not this is the right move???  Feel like I need to go through LEXUS dealership for something this big rather than independent mechanic that may be cheaper.

It looks like you being taken to the cleaners on that price for a used engine. I would not hesitate one bit about going to an independent shop for this kind of work, the RX series has been out for a long time so the independent shops have had plenty of time to catch up. If your still unsure then find a shop that specializes in Toyotas cause that is all your Lexus really is and you will absolutely get a better job done cause most of those shops pay the Techs hourly wage instead of only flat rate so the Techs tend to take their time and do it right the first time.
