I have a 72 Chevelle and it will fire on the let off of the key but won't start, acts like it doesn't get enough gas but when you pump it a few times it then acts like it is flooded.

It has a Carter Carb on it.  Wondered if something is wired wrong because of it firing when you let off the key.

That sounds like there is no spark when in the crank position on the key, could wiring, could be the ignition switch.
