Leaking Transmission

Asked by May 07, 2011 at 11:55 PM about the 2007 BMW 5 Series 530i

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I test drove a 2007 BMW 530I today. I took the car to my car guy and he found it to have a leaking transmission. He said he could fix the problem. If I buy this car for $20,975.00 with 71K miles is it worth it and will I have problems with the transmission in the future?

A leak from the trans is most likely from the plug hsg for the trans electronics, there is an updated plug unit for this, also despite being a "lifetime fill" oil it theoretically should be changed at 120,000km (70 - 80k miles). so a new sump gasket, seal and sump plug would be decent maintainence at this point. be sure they use the correct oil for the trans however or else major shift issues may occur, even destruction of the internals of the trans

178k miles. Asking $2300. Says no transmission or engine problems, runs great. I have not seen in person yet. What are important questions to ask. I can't afford immediate problems and repairs.
