Overfill of oil on 2009 forester xs premium

Asked by Oct 23, 2019 at 12:14 AM about the 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5 X Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi, Ive just filled my forester with oil, for some
reason it was showing next to nothing on the
dipstick after having head gasket done a few
weeks ago, Ive overfilled it , it's up to the end of the
part that twists on the dipstick, I am guessing a
litre over? Does someone else know better? I've
read that the oil pan is quite big and will allow for
this not to cause issues with the crank shaft, to
look out for foaming in the dipstick, and that
many mechanics purposely overfill this engine, I
need to know if I should drain or if it'll be ok
please?
Thankyou in advance
Jo

I would remove the excess.

The main concern I would have is why does the engine show next to no oil after having a head gasket replaced a few weeks ago. You need to ask thee mechanic about this. He might have mistakenly added too little oil, or this might be a sign that his work was not done correctly or the engine has other problems. You seem to know enough about the oil situation to rectify the over-fill problem now; yes, remove some oil.

I took it down, it was perfect level, I don't have a level driveway but had it quite close to flat but that can make a great difference apparently, the mechanic said that it can take a while after the head is done for the oil to settle bit was still concerned, so I'll keep an eye on it , on the upside, found a great honest mechanic who seems to know his stuff , will be going back and he refused to let me pay him thankyou for advice, love my Subi, never felt so safe in a car but these boxer motors can be a pain

If the driveway is a little out of level, that won't make any noticeable difference. The mechanic said that it can take a while for oil to settle? And that's after you saw next to nothing on the dipstick weeks later? I've worked on lots of engines and have never heard that one before. Sounds as if he's worried that his NEGLIGENCE might cost him an engine. Find another mechanic.
