Which car should I buy? Mazda3 vs. Pontiac Vibe

Asked by Guru9C7RRC Aug 17, 2021 at 11:13 AM about the 2009 Pontiac Vibe 2.4L

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I'm looking at a 2010 Mazda 3 GX hatchback
(https://www.kijijiautos.ca/cars/mazda/3/used/#vip=21861423) or a 2009
Pontiac Vibe 2.4L FWD
(https://www.kijijiautos.ca/cars/pontiac/vibe/used/#vip=21745586).

I'm looking for something that can be my new adventure vehicle to take me
hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, camping, etc., but that will also not be a gas
guzzler while driving around town. Most of the access roads to outdoorsy
things near me are paved, so I'm not too fussed about AWD, and I will
definitely be putting winter tires on the vehicle for snowy weather. Reliability
is also a priority.

I would really appreciate any thoughts on which would be a better buy or
experiences from owners of either car. Thanks so much!

It is hard to recommend any car that is more than 10 years old. In general I might pick the Mazda but you need to have a mechanic check it out before buying. I Highly recommend AWD for snow. Once you have it you won't go back.

Mazda! Anything is better than a 12 year old GM. Jim

The Vibe, though I would not recommend a 2009 or 2010. The 2003-2008 models had a better engine.

And just to clarify James’ answer, the Vibe was marketed by GM but it’s a Toyota Corolla drivetrain (in a slightly modified Toyota Matrix body, but branded as a Pontiac). A very tried and true, reliable drivetrain which very often runs past the odometer limit of 298,999 miles!
