Car stops on the highway. Checking the engine shows that oil is empty. Starting the car
again gives a cranky sound.

Can somebody help with this issue.

if the car ran out of oil then it is burning or leaking bad. stop driving and have it towed to mechanic and pray the engine isn't ruined. If it really ran out and then sounded bad on restart, it could be an expensive fix tho.

You might want to do a Google search for "Toyota Camry Excessive Oil Consumption" There is a Class Action Lawsuit concerning this issue. If your car has less than 70,000 miles on it....call your Toyota Dealer and have it fixed for nothing. There also is a Toyota Service Bulletin to cover this repair. Good Luck
