Life span of '08 335xi sedan

Asked by Feb 21, 2016 at 12:01 PM about the 2008 BMW 3 Series 335xi

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi all,
A local dealership has a 2008 335xi sedan on the lot for $10,995 with
115,000 miles. I'm torn because the car is in / below my price range but is 8
years old with a lot of miles on it. I'm nervous about how long the car will
last me until i need to start putting in serious repairs which i know are
expensive on a BMW. Looking for advice / feedback on the situation.
Thank you!

All I see is grief with BMW's, I'd look for another brand.

Maybe this will help you decide. I agree that BMWs can be finicky and expensive to repair. It's over the normal miles by a little, but, I've seen worse instances. Do you really want this car? http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2008/BMW/3-Series/Sedan-4D- 335i/Values

Walk away, it's a used BMW and it will likely be trouble.

FYI- these cars are very nice, however, there's a lot of really expensive parts on these cars. And, if something does go wrong, you could be spending a lot of money on repairs. The image factor is extremely high on BMWs. Just depends on what you want. Good luck. http://www.carcomplaints.com/BMW/335/2008/

As an alternative, I am considering a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, limited trim for $10,995 with 79,000 miles on it. Thoughts on the hyundai's life span and maintenance?

1sttimebuyer- Price is not out of line, but, take a look at the Car Complaints report, it says to "avoid this car". Have you considered a Toyota Prius or Camry?? They have an outstanding record of repairs. What exactly are you looking for? Or, maybe a 2010 or 2011 Subaru Outback? Here's my car, http://www.carcomplaints.com/Subaru/Outback/2010/ http://www.carcomplaints.com/Hyundai/Sonata/2011/ http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2011/Hyundai/Sonata-4- Cyl/Sedan-4D-Limited/Values

1sttimebuyer- by the way, my other car is a 2009 Toyota Prius. Outside of regular routine maintenance, the car has been flawless. And my mechanic tells me that this car can easily go well beyond 200,000 miles without any major issues. I've met many taxi drivers, LYFT, etc. They have over 250,000 miles on those cars.

I'd stay away from a 2011 Sonata with higher mileage, especially. The engines in 2011-2012 models are known to give out very early (70k-100k range). Just look on the Hyundai forum. They're good cars, but you have to be careful with that you get.

Avoid the Sonata. I would look at Toyota or Honda for a reliable easily serviced vehicle.
