2008 Mercury mountaineer makes a rumble sound at 45-60 mph.

Asked by Guru92TJPG Sep 03, 2022 at 02:48 PM about the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer V8 Premier AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I turned off overdrive and the rumble stopped.  Does it need transmission fluid
or a flush or could it be a torque converter?

Tranny fluid should be pink with no burnt smell and at the proper level , sounds like you drove around in over drive thinking it was a turbo boost or something and the clutches in the tranny are shot . If it runs good with over drive off then that's what you should do .

it also could be a transfer case issue, have a trans mechanic or local garage trust drive it.

Whatever you do, DON'T flush the transmission fluid! On an older model a fluid flush is often the kiss of death!! Jim
