2008 mini yellow check enging light staying on loss of power and backfires idle very low

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

after racing another mini in my neighborhood for fun I noticed the yellow check engine light on and pulled into gas station where it the idle dropped sig and stalled out.  When I fired it back up it took a lot of gas to keep the car started and it backfired a couple of times.  I pushed the sport button off and drove home and there was a sig loss of power.  I thought it might be something to do w the timing, and my son said it could be something called throddel control sensor ?  I'm not a mechanic and am scared I might have really messed things up in my mini.  I drove it hard, but I would think that racing another mini on a side street wouldn't cause major problems , I mean it is the s model and the car I was racing was not!  So now its parked and I am thinking of towing it in , and wanted to know some of the possibilities of what and how much its going to be to fix this problem.  My son also mentioned somwthing about the timing tensioner or something?

Since the check engine light is on, scan the car for the codes, to pinpoint the area of what is wrong. Probably a hose popped off creating a vacuum leak, or could be any 100 of things.
