If you have the defroster on, that kicks on the A/C to remove moisture, which in turn kicks on fan. It will go off when engine cools to a factory default temperature, albeit 10 minutes does seem like a long time. When running does it run at normal temperature on gauge?

there is a possibility that either the fan relay is bad (located under the hood) or there may be a grounding issue. I would try replacing the relay first if that does not work you will need to check the grounding.

I did some looking around and there are two sensors, I suck at trying to draw with a mouse so I just put arrows to one in red and one in blue.Yellow circle was already there around sending units. One is for gauge, the other is for fan. Trouble is I can't find out which is which, but reading some MINI forums that, what you describe happens when coolant gets low.

Fan comes on as soon as the car starts and does not go off straight away

I believe that the sensor for the fan has 2 wires in the connector and the gauge sensor only has one.
