Anti theft issue or something else

Help I'm going crazy. I bought a 2008 ford Ranger
2.3l manual 3 weeks ago.  Starting having
problems with starter not fully engaging but could
push start it. When all this started happening the
theft light started coming on. Replaced starter
didn't fix it.  Took it to ford dealer got new key
programmed and that wasn't it. They ran some
wire from starter to ground or something.  SO 700
and it starts but driving down the road theft light
comes on then truck dies. I can remove key and
put back in then it will start again.  No check
engine light no codes. Wth could this be
