chains should be changed at 120,000...what happens is the pushing tensioner runs out of room/tensioner...and the wear shoes responsible for the tension run out of wear and the chain stretches a little at a time...till it sounds like a folgers can full of marbles....put a new tensioner, wear shoe and chain...will require disassembling the timing cover...should pony up for sprockets too if they look worn~

check the blogs (word on the street) it Identifies the car to have a chain~
2008 4runner with the 4.0 v6 motor uses a timing chain!
