Timing chain

Asked by GuruL7V7D May 01, 2019 at 10:56 AM about the 2008 Nissan Xterra SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Xterra stopped running, had it towed and the Camshaft sensors ( both)
replaced along with the crankshaft sensor, still won't start at times and when it
does is takes several tries, runs good.  Mechanic says timing chain and all
related parts needs changing, $2000

For $2000 you either need a new mechanic or a new truck. I would first scan for codes and confirm that the parts you changed, where actually the problem. Camshaft and crankshaft codes are P0340 and P0320. The fault codes would still be stored if not intentionally cancelled., but scan anyway and see what comes up. I would also be looking for a fuel problem if it takes several tries to start. Maybe it is just a clogged fuel filter older than 30K miles.

An independent mechanic can find and fix anything a dealer can, and it will be a lot less expensive. I avoid dealers like a plague, especially on an old vehicle unless the was a recall notification. When I can't fix something...I'm getting old...my independent mechanic will work fast for $60-$70 an hour cash. Your auto parts store can scan your truck for free.
