Clicking sound when turning key?

Asked by nd92 Nov 12, 2014 at 01:24 AM about the 2008 Hyundai Elantra GLS FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I want to start out by saying I don't know much about cars.

I just bought a 2008 Hyundai Elantra.  Today I noticed that when I turn the key into the
last position before starting (when the air/heat and radio work, but the engine isn't
started), I hear a clicking sound coming from the front of the car.  The clicks start as
soon as I put the key into that position.  After about 5-6 quick clicks in 2-5 seconds, it
stops.  The clicking is the same every time.  It sounds exactly like when you're
igniting a gas stove.

Just to be clear, the car starts fine.  There is no clicking when I'm turning the key far
enough for the engine to turn over.  It's only when I put it in the last position for
radio/ac/heat.

Is this normal?  I never noticed it with my other car.

Electric fuel pump. Get worried if it doesn't do it.

My 2006 Elantra clicks frequently. I told dealer about it but they said it wasn't clicking when they tested it - a possibility since it doesn't always happens. It first occurred when I was going around a curve. It now seems to occur whenever the car "strains" on a hill. Since car is old I am willing to just live with it but I am disturbed that dealer doesn't think its a big deal. I am pretty sure it is an electrical issue, since my batteries have worn out early since clicking started.
