the check engine light came on on my car and I don't have my car manual how do I figure out what's wrong

Your manual won't help you, you need an OBDii car scanner to retrieve the codes as to why the light is coming on. An local auto parts store will do this for free, you can buy one for $25 or your mechanic can help you out.
