Gas cap was lost, how does that impact the car?

The EVAP system relies on it, can trigger a check engine light. Try running some gasline antifreeze in your next fill up, can help eliminate water in your tank. Fumes escape. May be smelling gas. Water/dirt can get in tank. If in a wreck, you do not want fuel escaping for obvious reasons its flammable.
