What would cause a 08 PT Cruiser to blow out black smoke and not accelerate ?

when attempting to accelerate the car black smoke comes from the back end
of the car and it doesn't won't to accelerate. Can you tell me what is causing
this to happen? Could it be a bad motor?

Sounds like it is running rich, number of things could cause this like an 02 sensor. Should have it checked for codes, this would pin point more on where the problem is.
