Ford Explorer value/mileage conerns

Asked by aaron_stirn Feb 13, 2020 at 10:43 PM about the 2008 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

So I found an '08 Ford Explorer Limited with 161k miles on it. Went and saw it
and nothing really stood out as a red flag, and when we test drove it on the
highway and around the dealership it  felt and sounded fine. Should I have any
other major concerns? The price seems very modest at around $6500 and I
want to make sure I don't just buy a clunker that will break on me in a few
months or even a few years.

Beware of the 4.0 V6 cam chain issue. There is a reason why these SUV's are called Exploders.

I wouldn’t chance it, they are just to iffy to spend any money on. I know my old Mountaineer when it hit 150K it started the old nickel and dime repairs, you know small stuff that is just irritating, a sensor here and there, bearings, then at 170K the transfer case went out, and from there on it just wasn’t pretty. The final thing was a broken piston, then it was just junk.

Obviously listen for a cam chain rattle. The later 4.0's like this one are better than the older ones. You could have a mechanic check it out. Personally I probably would not buy one of these as the fix is quite costly. Offer less if you proceed with this buy.

Avoid it! Take your 6500 and consider leasing a new vehicle, versus a high mileage used one. Or look for an older, rust free, lower mileage car, like an early 2000's Honda or Toyota.
