Believe it or not, check your brake lights. I called the dealer and the guy suggested before I spent a ton of money replacing a bunch of parts, that I check the brake lights. If they are out, the cruise control won't work. Ok. Turns out all 4 lights on the 3rd set of lights were out. So, I spent $5 replacing the 4 lights and the cruise works perfectly now!

In May of 2014 GM had a recall on a few vehicle for a "Tail Light Malfunction" in which the Cruise Control quit working and warnings like Service ESC, Service Traction Control, ABS, etc displayed on the dash. In most cases either the Brake Lights stopped working or became stuck on all the time. The HHR has the same defective parts as the recall models but GM got away without including the HHR on the recall. Contact the NHTSA and file a complaint to help make GM fix it under the recall.

I am a ase master tech. I have repaired many hhr cruise control problems. 9 times out of 10 the problem is in the tail lights. First thing you want to do is make sure all the tail light bulbs are working.
