If you're asking why your gasoline engine sounds like a diesel, then you should check oil level. If it's low you'll get a lot of rattling and knocking sounds (and then a motor self-destructing). If it has a bad exhaust it will also be loud. An exhaust leak at the manifold can be very loud, and also sound like a tapping noise in addition to just being a loud exhaust. Couldn't hurt to take it to a mechanic for an inspection.
