It is time to replace the timing belt on my 2008 Acura TL.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

It has 106,000 miles on it. The place I called is saying that they recommend I replace the water pump and drive belt at the same time. Am I getting scammed on this? They have not even looked at it yet. This would double the repair cost !

With that many miles, replacing the water pump is the thing to do. Labor is most of the cost if the pump went out later-- it's inside the timing cover. No you are not getting scammed--except it should not double. A timing belt/water pump kit is under $200 at http://www.1aauto.com/timing-belt-kit-with-water-pump-gates-tckwp329/i/gaeek00013?f=481787&y=2008&utm_campaign=gb_csv_br&utm_content=EEK&gclid=CM-X1YnjosECFcNhfgodBWIAsA add labor.. ...which should give you a clue why they sell it as a kit

The owners manual recommends that the timing belt be replaced every 60,000 miles. In harsh climate it's 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The engine in Acuras are called "interference" engines. If the belt breaks under operating conditions, it 's goodbye old engine and hello new or rebuilt one.. The water pump is a side maintenance preventative replacement service. My 06,TL has 144,000 miles and feels like a 6 month old car , all scheduled service has been attended to and it has paid off.
