3008 Highlander Hybrid Won’t Start

Asked by Kimberly Jun 12, 2019 at 11:21 AM about the 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My HH wouldn’t start. When depressing the brake
and pressing the ignition button (which did turn
green) some of the dash lights flickered on.
Thought it was the battery so I got a jump. With
the cables connected, the car behaved the exact
same way. Ignition button was green, pressed it all
dash lights came on but engine would never start.
Never received the READY light. What am I dealing
with? (First time hybrid owner).

I have a 2008 Highlander. Have owned it since 2010. You describe exactly what happened to me this first time the normal small ignition battery that is under the hood went bad. It is the one that all cars have. Not the hybrid battery. It needs to be replaced about once every three years depending on the battery. Once the battery goes, jumping does not work. We got stranded and the only store opened was Walmart. It doesn’t give much warning. Second time it needed replacement we got warnings about the airbag and the breaks until a few days later car just wouldn’t start. It was the small battery again. Original Hybrid battery for the call is still going strong. Now we just buy a new small battery for all three of our hybrid cars every three years to be safe. They all three acted the same. We love our hybrids. They all have around 200k miles.

I just bought 2020 Highlander Hybrid brand new two weeks ago I have the same problem I can not start the car after 349 miles, all warning lights came on and the car make a lots of noise. I kept switch on and off lucky I got the engine running but even engine is running all the warning lights stay on. So I just drove the car to the dealer right away with nothing working except engine is running. When the technician look at it he said the 12V battery running low he thought I been used too much Accessory power that why the 12V battery ran low I told him everytimes I in the car I used Accessory power only one time when the computer shutoff I dont used Accessory power no more unless I let the car running. He said when the 12V battery ran low the computer shutdown all Hybrid System that why all warning lights came on. So he recharged the 12V battery and reset computer back to normal the car seem running okay. They asked me to bring the car back. So I took the car back home and I do just like what he said this time when I sit in the car I dont run Accessory power at all NONE! I want to see if the car still do the same as before. I drove the car for 3 days its heppened again this time it heppened at night time so I can not drive to dealer right away I have to wait till morning and since I wait till morning I have to jump start the car to make engine run so I can drive to dealer and the car do the samething all warning light stay on. Now all I have to do just wait to hear what they say. I feel BAD! I just want to share with you guy this is my first time owned Hybrid Car I dont think I like it, I been owned so many cars never have problem like this.
