I just had my 2008 Highlander with 83,000 miles in for a light whine that just started after the car sat for a week while we were on vacation. The dealer is telling me the transmission needs to be replaced at a cost of $5300. Does this sound normal that a transmission would go on a properly maintained vehicle?

If car shift,s good, and fluid is good n tranny,i would think it would be wheel bearing,or cv axel bad,or even brake,s sticking a little and scrubbing from setting a little, have these checked, before you take the advice of just one mechanic,it could be the tranny, but you will normally get shifting problem,s before you hear anything, have a different mechanic check what i said, first, then let him mention tranny not you,,,Good luck with it.
