08 Highlander Limited Timing Chain

Asked by GuruCRJXG Mar 04, 2019 at 07:04 PM about the 2008 Toyota Highlander Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Purchased an 08 Highlander with 134,500 on it,
runs good but now I'm worried whether or not the
timing chain was done (fine time to worry, after the
purchase) is it a must that it gets done? Do I let it
go? It isn't my everyday vehicle as I have a company
car

Your Toyota Highlander has a timing chain that normally lasts the life of the engine and should never need replaced. They might get noisy after 200K miles but that would be due to wear of the tensioner. Even then, I would not be concerned for it to break or jump timing. It's the vehicles with timing belts are the ones that you don't want to own. Broken belt on an interference engine is the end of the ride.

As long as the oil is changed when supposed to be changed well last the life of the engine.

If following maintenance schedule with it is all I will need to do I will be fine. Thank you!

Don't skimp on the oil changes! Chains have hundreds of moving parts and they all need clean oil.

Read the owners manual to see what weight they specify. Probably 5W20.

Depends on the engine. The Highlander 2008 model year v6 engine has a chain but the 4 cyl. engine has a belt. The v6 with chain doesn't need to be replaced as is good for the life of the engine. The 4 cyl. with belt will need to be replaced.

But why then does the dealer's manual for my 2008 Toyota Highlander hybrid limited, which is a V-6, state the timing chain should be changed at 90,000 miles?

My guess is just added revenue streams for the stealership. Always get your timing belts replaced at the recommended intervals, but chains will last at least 200k miles, as Hornet stated not because the chain itself but the tensioners wear out and get noisy.

I have a 2008 highlander and a timming belt. It depends on when in the year it was manufactured. Call the dealer with your VIN.

2007 Highlander with 241000 miles Regular maintenance ( oil , etc ) every 3k to 5k depends on oil All differential and transmission was replaced at 145k Just come from a 3k miles trip Still running excellent Total millage 241000 , up to today , after regular maintenance, I only spend $ 360 on a pipe that was leaking oil . Thinking to buy new one Doing some research
