I have a 2008 Buick Lucerne CXL and abou 20% of the time the brake pedal will go all the way to the floor before the brakes work, what is the problem? More details below.
My 2008 Buick Lucerne CXL has 86,800 mile on it. I bought it 4 weeks ago
from a dealer with only one previous owner. It drives great is a nice car. the
night we bought it when we got back to our home town about 50 miles from
the dealer the break pedal was very soft and went to the floor before the
brakes would work. The next day the brakes worked just fine. About 80% of
the time brakes work great the other 20% the pedal goes to the floor before
the brakes work. There has never been a brake or ABS warning light. I had
the brakes checked and the pads are good, master cylinder is full and no
leaks in the system. Can someone please help me?
You have either: a ruptured vacuum line (or weak line) -or- a malfunctioning brake master cylinder The ABS system may not necessarily detect a master cylinder failure
Soon after we bought our 4.6 l 2007 Lucerne in 2012 (it had one previous owner and 95000 miles), it developed a peculiar brake problem. There were signs of brake overheating (pulsing, softness etc.) but no warning lights. We were scared to drive the car until we found out that these GM cars require special ceramic brakes that the dealership did not install when preparing the car for sale. Once corrected (GM did this for free since the problem was part is a bulletin), the car has been driving well. It is a comfortable, nice car.
Ceramic brake pads will not correct a brake pedal that falls to the floor- however if you have air in your brake lines, that can definitely cause the symptoms. Air in your brake lines can come in a myriad of ways— the most common is a ruptured brake line, or a slightly open caliper vent. The other can be a faulty abs unit or a brake master cylinder failure. Take note, and don’t let the dealership rip you off.
