Car's GPS Stopped Working

Asked by Will May 10, 2019 at 02:29 PM about the 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

There is a bit of backstory to this matter. A pretty common problem on these
cars is that the starter, as the car ages, starts to stick and not completely
disengage the flywheel whenever you start the car. This makes a loud
grinding sound and is definitely not good for the car.

So I did what any person would do and replaced it myself. I did this back
around mid April. The repair worked great and now I have nice quiet starts.
Only one thing was not right, when I got in the car, my clock was blank. My
car has the navigation system with the flip out screen thing to get the discs.
So, I thought I would just set the time right? Nope, I couldn't set the time!

Fast-forward about a month later, and I try to use the navigation system. Low
and behold the map shows a "GPS" logo with a red slash through it (see
picture). Since the clock needs a GPS signal for keeping time, that is why my
clock was not working.

What I want to know is how do I fix this? I am not in the mood to replace the
radio or do anything like that, is there a way to set the time on this clock
without having to use a GPS signal? All this happened from changing the
starter.

I have exactly the same problem after replacing my starter on the same year GXP - although on mine after about a mile or so I do get the GPS to come on but it still doesn't sync the time. In addition to day, date & year on the DIC is linked to this and won't retain the date - even when you reset it manually. Again any help that can be provided would be much appreciated.

Up until about a week ago, my date and time have not been working properly in my car. Out of no where, it decided it would start working again! I have no explanation as to why it started working, other than I went to go get groceries. However, my date is still acting wonky. I will set the date to today's date, and it will just reset back to January. All I really care about it the time, and it seems to be able to keep it. As far as I am concerned, that is good enough for me.

Good to know there's still hope without having to replace the oem Monsoon system with Nav/HUD integration! On that note, I will be going to the grocery store in 2 weeks, lol. I'll keep you updated!

1. Please call into GM Pontiac Customer Service, 1-800-762-2737 or Chevy Customer Service 1-800-222-1020, they do not think this is a problem with the Pontiac Grand Prix GXP (even though Cadillac, Chevy and GMC with the same system are having this issue. If you don't report it, they won't find a fix for it. 2. Service Bulletin #PIT5652E (Document ID: 5355382) outlines a similar problem, but the fix will not work for navi systems with the RPO of U3U, U3Z, URB, US4 AND YQ4 --> GXP option was the US4). 3. One person on another site stated that the GPS/Clock issue is related to the military making a change to the GPS signal on or about 12/12/18. The radio firmware needs to be updated, but GM/Denco do not have a fix yet. (This was related to a Corvette with the same navi system as ours.) Please call in and report this to GM. If they don't hear from us, they will assume all is fine and not fix our system. PS Yep, mine is doing the same thing after battery replacement - 2006 GP GXP

I have this same issue. Disconnected my battery for 10 mins to clean the terminals, connected back and lost the date, time and have a red slash though my GPS. Called into GM and got tossed around to department to department with no good answer or them even acknowledging that there is an issue on there end. They said to take it to a dealer and see if they can help. There isn’t a map upgrade for our cars, so this isn’t looking good. I’ve disconnected my battery before and have an no issues after reconnecting. Seems like this is a recent thing. Dumb how a car can be 12 years old and obsolete - but I guess when they don’t make them anymore, that happens. Anyone else have an update?

I called and spoke with Chevy customer service. I asked if there was a recall or a fix for this issue and that I wanted to report it to them, since it seems to be an issue with many vehicles/radios. I was on the phone with them for 30 minutes. Basically, they told me to take it to the dealership. I also purchased the disc from frankabdo123 on ebay - now the clock works PERFECTLY :) Such an easy, cheap fix! I wasn't about to waste my time/money going to the dealership, and I'm glad I didn't.

Hi frankabdo123 - I can’t find this on eBay could you help point me in the right direction please?

the web address comes after the name of the vehicle not before. copy and paste the above address including the https that will get you to my Ebay site for the clock fix as you can see I have a fix for almost all the GM clocks that went blank. thank you for your interest.

I hate to do this to you Frank_clockfixer but I found a file online that fixed my clock! https://tis2web.akamai.gm.com/radio/corvette_gps_my_05_10_fix.zip Steps to fix your clock: 1. Download the file from the .zip file above. Once you have it downloaded, you will need to take the .KWI file and burn it to a CD-R. Don't worry about it saying it is for a corvette. 2. Make sure the vehicle is outside and the engine is running. 3. On the radio display, press the Open/Close Face plate Key 4. Eject the map disc by pressing DVD Map Database Eject Key. Insert the Software Update Disc in the DVD Map Database Slot 5. Power cycle your car. Make sure your radio complete turns off. My face plate did not close until I power cycled my car. Once I had my car completely off and started again, the face plate closed and it began doing the update. 6. Once the update is done, eject the software disk and put in your maps DVD again. 7. Press and hold the upper right spot where the clock is and it will take you to set the time. 8. Enjoy having your date on the DIC and clock on your radio work again. Hope this helps fix a lot of clock issues out there.

Go to ebay and type in 254472214381. It will take you to a seller that has a fix. I bought it and it fixed the GPS and CLOCK problem on my 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with the Monsoon map/radio.

Thanks for the file BigShmidty, it totally works! I put it on a DVD disk initially, and it didn't work until I burned the file to a CD-ROM. Thanks for the fix!
