Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just got this car and I had about half way between 1/4 and 1/2 a tank this morning once i
got to work I had a quarter... Its only 14 miles I dont think I should be using that much gas
at all even if it is older. Could it be a gas leak??

Easy answer, you will smell gas. If this is the case, do not drive the car but get it towed to a mechanic a.s.a.p. and do not store it in your garage until it is repaired. Clogged fuel injectors can really decrease your mpg.

If you had a fuel leak that was that high you will smell fuel and there should be evidence of a leak on the ground. Fuel gauges are just an estimate anyway. On my rig I can start out with what the gauge says 1/2 tank I drive 5 miles and park it, come back out a few minutes later ti says 1/3 of a tank go back home and park re check it a few minutes later and it is back to a 1/2 tank, but it seems accurate towards the 1/4 mark cause once it gets there it quits doing that. I think it has something to do with the width of each segment in the fuel sender, as the fuel level drops the segments get finer giving you a more accurate reading on the gauge.
