2008 Grand Marquis. Went through the trouble to take off door panel to find the numbers
for the exterior door lock number pad but numbers were smeared and unreadable. Is there
any other way. Thanks.

Yes there is a way. A high end OBD scanner can tell you the numbers from the OBD port. The lesser expensive scanners won't do it.
