Both my power steering and brakes have gone out on my 2008 F350, what caused this and how can I fix?

I removed some of the power steering fluid using a very clean (if possible use a brand new one) turkey baster, then I restarted the truck and let it run through then replaced the steering fluid to full. I'm not sure but there must have been an air bubble somewhere in the line and this cleared it out. This was a very inexpensive thing to try and it worked, when I called the dealer I was told it was $170. just to diagnose the problem.
