That's because with a 5th wheel trailer much of the weight is over the axle, not way back on a hitch, it's all about leverage

Understandable, but is this 5th wheel I want to purchase too much weight for my truck? I don't plan on traveling across country, just a few hundred miles here and there
DavidH25 answered 4 years ago
If it weighs 6900 empty, after you load it up with all your gear, whatever you load in it, you are pushing it. 100lbs over the rated weight is one thing, you would be fine, but if you, say, fill the water tank with 50 gallons....all your stuff, you actually in my opinion will be OK. Just right at the very limit. Be sure the trailer has good brakes.

Thanks, I've never owned a 5th wheel camper and all the numbers were confusing me. I appreciate all the help

Do NOT listen to DavidH25... You do not go over the GVWR EVER! If you are involved in an accident, you would be 100% liable for operating an illegal vehicle combonation on public roads. The manufacturer did not get that rating by asking peoples opinions on the internet. A lot of research and development went into those ratings. I would not want to go near that maximum but certainly not over it.
