HELP!!!!! A Lady

Asked by Jan 21, 2017 at 09:35 PM about the 2001 BMW X5 4.4i AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

01 BMW X5 - knocking
badly. I smell gas in
the coolant "tank".
After reading I suspect
a head gasket issue!
Prior to the issue
(approx 1yr) i had
water pump and
radiator issues. Both
"fixed". Post
"operation" i continued
to lose coolant but the
warning light didn't
warn! Checked the
coolant (leary since
operation). Was
almost bone dry. Filled
with water; drove it.
Ran fine to work
(approx 30 miles).
Leaving it was rough
and knocking...
Seemed to run fine (no
knocking on freeway).
BUT, by the time i got
off the freeway...
Omg!!! It was so loud
and knocking,
especially at stand
still! I was suspect @
bad gas because the
noise appeared to be
coming from rear, like
bad gas??? I
attempted to start it in
the a.m. with hood
lifted and!!!! Definitely
from the engine not
rear end
Let it sit about two
days (sad and
disgusted). When i
tried to start it again, i
couldn't get it to start.
After allowing gas to
to flow (4 sec wait
after turning key
forward) turning the
key all the way only
profited the sound as if
were struck in between
connect and start; a
constant rrrrrr'ing.
Started reading ran
into diagnosis (sounds
like my equal) the
remedy was Pour n Go
head gasket repair.
Anyone out there
agree i should try it?
Thanks for all your diy
ONLY info. Cannot
afford mechanic

You have 2 issues. #1 you can't afford a mechanic and #2 you can't afford a used BMW. Get rid of it before it eats every dime you have.

Bob pretty well summed it up, there- I guess you are learning the hard way about used BMWs and all 21st Century cars in general- you can't work on them yourself and most "mechanics" will mess them up if they are not trained- want to do your own wrenching? get a chevy truck from the '60s

Knocking and loosing coolant with a head gasket issue in a BMW will require thousands of $$$ worth of work. It is not a DIY, as most mechanics and backyard DIYers will pull an engine from another BMW and install due to labor costs of replacing the heads and head gaskets. Like the gentlemen above have mentioned, it's time to throw in the towel.

Thank you gentleman! Not to be rude, but no one has yet answered my question about Blue Devil. Oversight or ignoring? Thanks again

I would not use any repair in the can stuff, but some people have good luck with it. I won't be recommending it, but someone else probably will. If you are absolutely sure it is a head gasket issue it might be worth a try. Best of luck with it.

Forget the easy solutions in a can- wouldn't it be nice! Just pour a can of gunk in your engine and all your problems go away! The only thing a can of gunk in the engine does is make it all gunky when the engine comes apart and all the parts have to be cleaned
