Pedal goes to floor before working

Asked by Austin Sep 12, 2020 at 05:07 PM about the 2004 BMW X5 4.4i AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Long story short my booster failed so I took it to a
brake shop and they had it for almost 3 months and
gave it back with brake problems. They replaced
the booster and master cylinder. Now there is 4-5
inches of play in the pedal before it starts to
engage. With the car off, pedal is solid and at the
top. Once car is on, bleeds down to the floor. I’ve
pressure bled the brake stystem and now I’m going
to do the bleed procedure activating the abs pump.
Any ideas what the probelm is? Used all OEM
parts.

Hi Austin. I have the same problem. After I change the master cylinder with brand new one then bleed the system, the pedal still goes to the bottom when engine is running. Where you able to find solutions on your dilemma? thanks

Hey so I took the bmw to a brake shop and they had it for literally 5 weeks and charged me and never fixed it. I ended up fixing it myself. It was actually a TON of air in the system. I made my own brake bleed “tool” to do it. I got a Gatorade bottle and used brake clean to clean all the water out then filled the bottle 1/4 of the way full with brake fluid and put a rubber hose into the fluid (make sure the end stays in the fluid) and put the other end on the Blake caliper bleeder valve. Open the valve and start slowly pressing the brake peddle multiple times until you don’t see any more air coming out. Repeat on each tire. I also used a snap-on scanner and was able to activate the abs pump to get all the air out of it too. Hope that helps

And btw I first used a brake flush machine (puts fluid in the reservoir and sucks on the bleeder valves and that didn’t work. You might need to have a computer that can activate the ABS pump.

Thanks for the reply Austin. I am going to try it. I am ordering the Autel Maxi check that can activate abs (auto bleed) for only $175. Thanks again
