Oil consumption!?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Heavy oil consumption in a 2001 Tahoe
5.3L 4WD A/T. Around one QT. per 700
miles. Not a leaker, other than a what
appears to be a small (?) Rear main leak.
Doesn't smoke upon startup. Steady normal
(above 40psi oil pressure when started.
Has great oil pressure all around. Does
leave a decent smoke cloud when taken
above 4000 rpm, suh as downshifting to
pass, etc. Seems EXTREMELY high
consumption to me. Has always used a bit
of oil every since i bought it at 52,000 miles
but has increasingly gotten worse, used to
be around 2000 miles I would need to add a
qt. Now has 207,000. Any thoughts ideas
other than new rings, etc would he greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

Blue smoke cloud would be burning oil. A black smoke cloud when passing would be running rich. Outside the engine wear, have you checked the PCV valve? Clogged or dirty valve will cause oil usage.

Our 2007 Avalanche and 2007 Tahoe both use oil since about 75,000 miles I know of several others in and around this year that have the same problem having to add several quarts of oil between changes. It seems to happen A lot on the 5.3 engine. Dealerships have not offered A recall sadly.
