If you are handy, go to the junkyard and pull one off a similar vehicle. It's not that hard and you'll see how to put it back together again. And you'll save a ton

how much would it cost (ballpark) if I couldn't get the part from a junkyard?

First thing to determine is what is broken. A vehicle your age could experience the same problem if the striker on the door post looses the plastic shield from it via use. The drivers side door is usually the first one to go. Look at the striker screwed into the post/pillar on the vehicle. It sticks out about an inch and a half. Visually compare it to the others on the vehicle. If the plastic is missing, there is one of your problems, maybe your only problem. Ford will ower one for your vehicle at about thirty bucks a piece. You can get them on the internet for about eleven bucks each. It is replaced with a "star" socket via the flat portion of the striker on the end. It screwed in and out. the screw hold moves sideways for adjustment in and out for a perfect fit.
