If the boot is torn, I suggest you replace the whole shaft, as the joint has been compromised with dirt. Here are some instructions and pictures to help you......http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187964

my suggestion as well otherwise take the whole axle out and then clean throughly and pack it with grease and put new boot on if you choose that way
