Consider when the vehicle is in park, neutral, or reverse there is very little load on the motor. Even in reverse most vehicles will not move at normal idle until gas is applied. Since the engine dies in drive, more load is being placed on the engine. First thing that comes to mind is when was the last tune-up? Now a question. The then engine sputter and die in drive and just kill straight away?
