03 explorer ran hot

Asked by Oct 25, 2015 at 09:00 AM about the 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have an 03 ford explorer 4.0 v6 ran hot
about 2 months ago.  Changed water pump
and thermostat new plugs ran great made
about a 3 hour trip yesterday and got off the
interstate and at about my 4th red light it
got hot pulled over in a prking lot and
turned off immediately.  Could it be the
clutch fan?  Everything else is new.

Very possible the clutch fan, I would be concerned over a bad head gasket since it over heated before, heads are aluminum and would have warped. A compression test could tell if there is a bad head gasket, but it wouldn't hurt to try the fan clutch first. It is old.

The 03 V6 explorer has a plastic thermostat housing. If the vehicle overheads these usually warp/crack and begin leaking fluid ever so slightly. Check the housing for the presence of coolant lying on the top. If it is leaking from the bottom, the water usually travels across the top of the engine and begins dripping around the area where the tranny meet the engine block.
