The Ford 427 was Never a Cobra Jet, it's an early design FE engine the latter FE block design engines are 390's and the 428 which was available as a Cobra Jet and a Super Cobra Jet. These power plants were used until 1970...starting in 1971 the new design 385 series 429, 460 replaced all the FE's AND yes Ford built Mustangs with factory installed 427's.
