I'd suspect a defective engine coolant temperature sensor or a bad fan temperature switch.

To me, "temp gauge creeps over towards hot" doesn't sound normal.

If the fan kicks in to compensate and it returns to a normal temp it is . lets say it didn't get hot enough for the fan to kick on , what would the need of the fan be ? "Creeps over towards hot" any vehicle would after being started as most run near 200 degrees. The question is, is it near over heating or not. If is doesn't have a clogged catalytic converter, isn't low on coolant and doesn't have a blown head gasket or any other issue that would cause overheating then it is normal.
