Slipped trans gears?
I just bought a used 07 Impala and I'm now having
transmission problems a couple weeks in. The
dealership says the fluid needs changing but they
won't do it themselves. The car stopped on me
before I could get it to a shop. It will run but won't
shift into Drive, 3rd or 2nd. A friend said he had the
same problem and changing his fluid and filter was
all it took to fix it. I'm wondering if that's all I need
and what's up with the gears? Have they slipped?
And is that something I can repair myself?
I'd suggest taking it to a reputable transmission shop. GM has had transmission problems with their car platforms for many years now. In most cases it's the shift solenoids that fail. The fact that the Chevy dealer won't do a fluid change tells me they don't want to take a chance on being on the hook for a transmission repair. Sounds like this is another known GM issue that your dealer is respectfully backing away from! One thing you can do is run a Carfax report on the car. If the transmission has already been replaced (definitely not unheard of on a GM car) you may be covered by a transferable warranty. I was with my '02 Impala. Let's hope you are!! HTH. -Jim
