Timing Belt Replacement
If it has never been done, right now.
Yeh, that's a 80-100 recommended service. It's not a hard job though, easy access, so it shouldn't cost too much.
2006 Rav4 has a timing chain, not a timing belt. There is no recommended replacement interval for the timing chain. It is possible for them to become stretched, but that would most likely be in the 200,000+ miles range.
BRBill is right you know. 2006 - 2012 are timing chain only. If it is rattling or making a grinding noise it is most likely just the VVT-i sprockets on the camshaft have locked up or malfunctioning. Chains do stretch over time, but we are talking a long time. It is best to buy a complete kit with Sprockets, Chain and Tensioner and get them ALL replaced. How do I know this? I am a Mechanical Engineer and own a 2006 RAV4 myself and mine had the same problem. If the idle is low, that is a SURE indicator that this is the problem. The other thing to check is the VVT-i solenoid and replace that first. If the problem persists, replace the Sprockets, Chain and Tensioner. Good Luck.
Have 06 timing belt has been replaced runs good but smokes ran fine before any ideas
If u mean the serpentine belt...check the actual condition of the belt...change it urself 15 bucks and buy a bar tool to pull the tensioner...u can do it with other regular tools but u can mess it up too (and it's harder) if you mean the timing chain...u don't have to change it if doesn't brake or make weird sounds...to change it ? oh boy that's a real work.
