years old. Are they safe or should I just replace them. I believe the recommended replacement is 5 yrs. Any experts out there?
Replace them. Mine literally just blew with out hitting a pot hole or anything. My car wasn't used since 1994 since I bought it though, but better safe then sorry.
As tires age, they begin to dry rot. This will happen regardless of the mileage on them. If the car is driven very little, the tires will degrade over time before the tread depth becomes unsafe. Regardless of the tread life remaining, I would play it safe and replace the tires at least every ten years.
the rubber will perish and degrade and likely to cause a serious accident as a tyre on a car revoles arround it expands and grows taller the faster you go the sidewall is put under extreme forces so regardless of the tread and outside condition the inside is degradeing through the friction and flex over here in the uk with the types of weather we have we recomend that you change them every 5 to 6 years
