Can a gas cap be reinforced?

Asked by UbuPearl Aug 03, 2020 at 07:13 PM about the 2008 Toyota Highlander Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I keep getting the check engine and VSC light
on. I've changed the gas cap, but it
still is not tight enough. I think the opening
itself might be warped. Is there a way to
reinforce the seal with silicone or something
to fill any spaces?

What trouble code do you have? The gas cap is often a "go to" fix that usually is not the problem. Jim

Hi Jim, Thanks for responding. I bought one of those Fixd devices and the code that came up was P0456 EVAP very small leak. Earlier when the lights first came on, I would just tighten the cap and the VSC and check engine light would disappear. Now, it seems I just can't tighten it enough.

There is probably another leak in the EVAP system which may take a smoke test to find.

You're welcome. Glad to help! Exactly what I was thinking, F_O_R. Some vapor leaks are too small to be seen with the naked eye so smoke is injected into the EVAP system to find the leak. If the filler neck or the gas cap is the culprit, the smoke test will tell the tale. Hope that helps! Jim

Got it. I was hoping to not have to go to the shop, but looks like that's what I need to do to get to the root of the leak. Thanks again!
