Car won't start
Every once in awhile I will put key in ignition but the car is completely dead.
No dash lights nothing, completely dead no horn lights door locks NOTHING.
The battery is fully charged. I wait,, insert key and turn multiple times, use
spare key but nothing happens. After awhile for no good reason I will put the
key in and it will start...this happens once every hundred miles or so. I don't
drive the car much for fear of being stranded. Did research which indicates it
may be the resister in the key(worn) or the ignition switch...it seems like a
security event because the car is so so dead.
Start with the easy stuff. The battery might be charged but there might be corrosion around the terminal contacts. Try loosening them and then pour baking soda on them and/or scrape them clean. Then tighten them up again.
Will the stereo lock out if I disconnect the battery to clean the terminals??
It depends on the stereo. If it's just a standard radio that came with the car, it may not lock you out. If it has an anti-theft device, try checking your owner's manual or other documentation from the dealer to see if the lock-out code was provided to you. If you can't find the code, call the dealer and ask for it. The parts department might be able to help you if you provide the VIN number of your vehicle. They shouldn't charge you to look up the code. Good luck!
