Engine misfire when accelerating

Asked by Guru9962PH Oct 18, 2020 at 05:27 PM about the 2007 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Sometimes when I get on the freeway, or going up
hills the engine loses power. Engine code shows
cylinder 1 missfire. If I pull over, shut off, restart,
the engine runs fine. Sometimes I here the engine
'ping' like engine is running to lean. If I switch the
ignition coils, do I have to reset the computer? Or
when I run diagnostic will it show 2 cyl misfires
instead of 1? Any other suggestions? 4 cylinder
motor 130,000 mi

Check the spark plugs. You can switch coils without any resetting of the computer.

Spark plugs seem fine. Changed them less than a year ago. Let me add, this happened almost a year ago. I changed the plugs (original plugs had 125,000 mi) also was having the same problem (cyl 1 missfire) even after changing plugs. But started running fine after about a week. Up until now

You may want to invest in a new set of coils. An aftermarket set on Amazon is cheap. Going 125K on plugs means you are not properly maintaining the car.

I honestly thought the spark plugs went 100,000 mi. on newer cars (until I checked the manual). Admit that the Only thing I've had to do to the truck regular oil changes, replace tires and one set of break pads. Never liked the size of this tacoma. Preferred the previous generation. But this truck just seems to go on and on(until this recent issue)

100k is one thing but 125k is crazy. Coils do go bad, not a biggie.

Swap the ignition coils and see if the misfiring cylinder follows the coil. If it does, the coil is definitely bad. Hope that helps! Jim
