2007 kia rio 5 engine stopped

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving down the freeway and the engine just stopped, I believe its the timing belt but I am getting conflicting stories. The car is an automatic and I'm wondering which is correct. Is my engine ruined or do I just need to change the timing belt? When I triedto turn it over it has a whirring sound but no clanking sound

If it's the 1.6L and timing belt broke or jumped time you probably have bent valves. The belt should have been inspected at 60k and replaced at 80k. Sorry for the bad news. Do a compression check on engine. This will let you know for sure if some are bent. Any cylinder showing 0 psi will have bent valves
