I just purchased a 2003 discovery SE7

Asked by thau1000 Nov 20, 2013 at 08:28 PM about the 2003 Land Rover Discovery SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I live in Murrieta Ca. I bought the SUV in Santa Barbra from a dealer. The car was
showroom and the seller assured me that it checked out 100% fine. About 5 miles of
returning home the head gasket blew. I took it to 2 Rover experts who both confirmed
this and told me it has happened many times with this year. They both quoted $5,000.
to replace the engine. That is close to what I paid for it. The car has just above 100k
miles but looks new. The dealer so far has shined me on. His quote was "YOU
BOUGHT IT" I was cool and he was simply a prick. My question is this,Has anyone out
there had this problem? Land Rover Corp also pretty much said screw you. Most
grateful for anyone to get back to me if they went through the same.
Regards,
Christopher

honestly Land Rovers are junk. I would have advised against buying one with that many miles, or one at all for that matter. Cut your losses and buy something reliable like a Honda or Toyota. Don't get it fixed it will give you nothing but problems.

This is a super old question, but after reading the previous answer i thought I'd try and put a different spin on this. I had a 2003 "disco" 2 years ago, and although i never had a head gasket fail i had just about everything else they are known for. Fixed the sagging headliner, leaking sunroof, three amigos light, replaced cracked front bumper which they all seem to have, rear door latch, hi/low 4wd solenoid, and I'm sure a couple of other things. It's British, it's... problematic. I feel they are still trying to get back at us from the whole 4th of July thing. You have to "want" to own one, it will ask a lot of you to make sure you truly want it. As the previous responder pionted out its not a Honda, which is a strength not a weakness. Who wants to drive a Honda, you drive one of those because you need to, not want too. No passion. If you own one, for whoever might read this in the future, first step is to understand the relationship your in. Then if you're good with that, start tackling one issue at a time. Every problem regardless of how big is only a series of nuts and bolts, take one at a time. Oh and don't try and make them perfect. Do just enough. It's like whack-a-mole, you'll never reach the end if you keep going.
