my car will not shift to first gear but it will shift all
of the other gears fine

Not sure what kind of car your working with but check for linkage or cable adjustment. also some column shift cars shifter gets loose inside the steering column and needs to be dismantled and repaired, If shifter seems tight then check adjustment.
