Cars are designed differently, even same car, new model can have design changes. If you suspect you're having a problem, you should not take any chances: either get car on a lift or on floor jacks. Then trace the particular brake line rear-right, rear-left backwards from caliper all the way back to reservoir.

well.. assuming you have ABS you would have to trace your lines from the master to the pump and then figure out which lines split off and go to the back, etc. I like Dann0's post. Safety first Todd. You can probably buy a super cheap electronic manual from ebay. I've done it for SF and SG foresters.

None of the former comments are helpful. The brake lines are routed out of sight. Visual tracing is impossible. Perhaps a factory service manual would help. I have Haynes and it's near useless for this or I wouldn't be here reading what some know-it-alls wrote 5 years ago.

Hi Chris! I rest my case. If anyone else stumbles into this forum expecting help, here is what I found elsewhere! This is from USMB Ultimate Subaru Message Board. Q: is there a diagram online somewhere showing the routing of the rear brake lines, it looks like a channel going down the right side inside the unibody best I can tell, am i correct, is it best just to run your own route cutting back to where it's good...thanks. A:The brake lines run inside the rocker sill, then emerge under the back seat, go through a grommet, and to the rest of the braking system. It is un-necessary to remove the gas tank to access the brake lines. A: https://www.subarupartsdeal.com/parts-list/1997-subaru-outback/suspension_axle_brake/brake_piping.html?diagram=06 While this doesn't exactly answer the question about the master cylinder, I found it helpful in formulating a solution to my specific issue, a rear brake line leak that drips down from above the cradle and gas tank where no lines are visible. In my case I'll splice new line in under the rear seat and run the pass side along the unibody frame to the wheel, and run the drivers side over the rear diff on the cradle. Good luck!

Most of my responses on this site involve finding a Subaru (or other make) forum for help. CG should probably drop this service. The SM ought to show the lines running through the body. Same goes for the abs sensors on my foresters being below the back seat inside the cabin. Best,
