On the key

Most likely the problem is the ignition lock cylinder. There's 2 tiny wires in there that contact the chip on the key to tell the computer the correct key is being used. They tend to wear and break over time. There were 15 chip possibilities used with GM's VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft System). Once you replace the lock cylinder use the template provided with the new lock cylinder to have new keys made. BUT be sure you have the correct VATS key blanks. You'll have to check the resistance value of the original key to make sure you have the correct new keys. Otherwise it still won't work. HTH. -Jim
